Cathy visits NT classrooms

The Starting Block Award ceremonies in Galiwin’ku and Wurrumiyanga were extra special at the end of last term with a visit from Cathy Freeman. It was fantastic to see so many families and community members in attendance. Highlights of Cathy’s visit included visiting classrooms and talking to students about leadership, setting goals, and overcoming challenges. In Galiwin’ku, Evelyna Dhamarrandji (Programs Coordinator) was very proud to introduce the students to Cathy and together they conducted class visits in both English and Yolngu Matha.

The Starting Block Awards are for the whole community to celebrate all of the hard work and good things their children have achieved in class. Awards are given for school attendance, achievement in classroom activities and positive attitude to learning.

“It is important to recognise the great work students do in school, to help them feel confident and proud. We are proud to recognise this at the Starting Block Awards in front of their friends, families and other community members,” says Evelyna.

“The Starting Block Awards make the parents proud. When the kids get an award, the mums get very motivated to come to playgroup and bring their children,” said Belinda, a local community member and Families as First Teachers staff member.

“I feel more empowered by bringing my kids to school and being a role model to other mums. Starting Block helps me as a mum and a staff member to engage with the playgroup and help other mums get their confidence up,” said Belinda.

We look forward to seeing more parents and community members at the next Starting Block Awards.
